The SEM can distinguish these by-products of a bullet's burning. Also, the SEM is used in addition with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) to decide a chemical fingerprint of the object being examined upon. The presence of lead, antimony, and barium in these minute particles while using the SEM/EDX technique suggests that the substance is GSR. But, the SEM/EDX is not suitable for the analysis of very small particles. The SEM lacks the 3-D segmenting capabilities of scanning beam confocal microscopes, which it overcomes by its imaging capabilities.
