Electron Microscopy Images - Some Aspects
Electron microscopy produces high resolution images or pictures or photos of specimens of materials, objects, or biological specimens. These electron microscopy images are then analyzed for various purposes in various fields.
In this article, information on some aspects of electron microscopic images is covered.
Electron microscopy images cannot be used directly for any productive purpose unless they are first analyzed. Experts in the specific field can only analyze and interpret these images. If a layman views high resolution images produced by an electronic microscope, such as those produced by electron microscope images of molecules, he/she will not be able to make head or tail of them.
Some scientists conduct stem cell research. They can then view the stem cells electron microscope images, analyze the internal structure of stem cells, and find out as to why stem cells are so important from the point of view of controlling diseases. With transmission electron microscope images, the resolution obtainable is in the vicinity of 1 to 10 nanometers. Such high resolution in an electron microscope image is conducive for proper analysis of certain defects observed in materials. Such defects may be those that are produced in steel forgings in view of stress corrosion cracking produced in them due to the passage of liquids containing high chlorides in them. Scientists have conducted research on disease causing parasites in poultry. They analyzed high resolution electron microscope pictures of specimens prepared from the samples in the gut of chicken and found that ascaridia galli, a nematode, was responsible for the disease. An electron microscope photo produced through use of a scanning microscope is a topographical pseudo-three dimensional image, whereas that produced through a transmission microscope shows only a silhouette. Electron microscopy images are used to analyze the defects produced in properly cross-sectioned metallographs/metallurgical evaluations. Such images are useful to determine defect mechanisms, material properties, and flaw characteristics. Electron microscopy images are used for metal corrosion testing and corrosion engineering. They are also used for micro-analysis through use of an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Such micro-analysis is useful to analyze the fracture geometry and microstructure. Elemental composition of materials can be obtained through the spectrometer. Electron microscopy images are useful for metallurgical failure analysis and forensic engineering. Typical failure of metals through various modes can be analyzed through these images. Fatigue, overload, corrosion, embrittlement, metal creep, wear, deformation, fretting, erosion, cracking and hydrogen damage, and stress corrosion cracking are some of these modes. For images that require analysis, specimen preparation is necessary. Polishing and/or grinding of metallic specimens is done before images are taken through an electron microscope. Electron microscopy images are used for various other purposes. They are used in the detection of cancer and as part of histological examinations
